Editor's Lead

Welcome to the February edition of the Jesus Joshua 24:15 Newsletter. Wow! It's February already? Alas, it was only a month ago that I was lamenting the fact that Christmas had come and and gone. Now, the first month of the New Year has drifted away. Only eleven months left in the year 2007.

Just recently, I decided to begin anew my reading of the Psalms, on a consistent daily basis. As I came to Psalm 2, I was startled by an interesting portion, found in verses 1-3. If you would allow me, I would like to quote this part and comment on it, as there is a very enlightening subject that these verses broach. I believe that this piggy-backs with January's editorial lead.

Psalm 2: 1-3 reads as follows; "Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against His Anointed One. 'Let us break their chains,' they say, 'and throw off their fetters.'"

I have read this passage many times over the years, but I seemed to have glossed over the immediate meaning and context of it. I find it very prophetic, given the state of world affairs, both in the political realm, and the realm of the private citizen.

What do I mean by prophetic? Well, let's examine this passage line by line;

"Why do the nations conspire AND the peoples plot in vain..."

Notice here that both governments and individual citizens conspire against the knowledge of God and His Christ. As citizens of a Democratic Republic, of which I am one, it becomes very easy to lay blame upon our Government for the reasons for wickedness and immorality that blight our nation, and others. And to a certain extent, some of that blame is well founded. However, especially in the United States, when the citizenry remains silent, you essentially get the government you deserve. While I believe that
there are dictatorial and theocratic governments on this earth, that do not decide based on the will of the people, and in fact, subvert it blatantly, we cannot lay the blame on the feet of it's citizens. However, the U.S. and other democracies that do not operate in a dictatorial fashion. Thus, since the people have the say, can we not suppose that the wickedness that grows, and the immorality that becomes ever increasing, is the fault of the people? I realize that not everyone subscribes to the actions of their respective leaders, and so I believe that they aren't to blame. But aren't there those who know exactly who they're voting for, and what effect those leader's policies will do to their nation? Or how about those who know what unhealthy policies certain leaders espouse, and choose to ignore the process altogether?

Verses 2&3 seem to flow together, so let's analyze them together, shall we?

"The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against His Anointed One. 'Let us break their chains,' they say, 'and throw off their fetters.'"

Whose chains are the kings and rulers speaking of? Clearly, when the
Scripture says that evil people take their stand against God and His Son, does it not mean that these leaders are taking a stand against believers?

What does "break their chains..." mean? What Chains? Could it be that the Scripture was illustrating how the unsaved world views the Faith?

If you have read my last couple of columns, you will note that this
conclusion is not far reaching. There are many in the world who view the Christian faith as nothing more than a burdensome set of chains on
an individual's personal autonomy. In other words, to them, Christianity represents no freedom at all. And there are those in the world who feel it is their right and duty to rid this world of such an "oppressive" kind of faith.

Liberty at the expense of responsibility is the world's agenda. As Ravi Zacharias wrote, in his book "Can Man Live Without God", "Greed, power, and indulgence will always find sacrifice, humanity, and virtue repugnant, for they stand in the way of self-aggrandizement."

The "kings of the earth" plot to "throw off our 'fetters'", as if somehow, we believers are "chained" into something that we don't really want.

The Apostle Peter, in his first letter (I Peter 4:3-4) wrote, "For you have spent enough time doing what pagans choose to do---living in debauchery, lust,drunkenness, orgies, carousing, and detestable idolatry. They think it strange that you (believers) do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you."

They think it strange...or, in other words, abnormal.By the world's standards, believers are abnormal. But we are not chained or fettered in any way.As a matter of fact, we are indeed free. Jesus said, in John 8:31-32, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really My diciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

To the world I say, you cannot break my chains, Jesus has already done so.

Guitar Points from Will

Last month, we looked at how intervals were used to create power chords.

This month, let's look at how we can make power chords into real music. First, let us review what a power chord is.

A power chord is a chord that contains just two notes, usually an interval of a 5th, or a fourth. You can generate power chords with intervals of Major and Minor 3rds, but those aren't the norm. Here's an example of a "power 5th";

Ex.1;
E5 E5 E5 1E|--------|--------|------------------------------| 2B|--------|--------|--5(E=1)----------------------| 3G|--------|--9(E=1)|--4(B=5)----------------------| 4D|-2(E=1)-|--9(B=5)|--2(E=1)----------------------| 5A|-2(B=5)-|--7(E=1)|------------------------------| 6E|-0(E=1)-|--------|------------------------------|

The E Major Scale has these notes;

Ex.2
Major Scale formula: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1 E Major Scale : E F# G# A B C# D# E

Notice the Root (or "1") = "E", and the "5th" = "B". No matter how many doubled notes there are in the chord, the power chord only contains two notes, the Root and the 5th. And no matter how you invert the order of the notes, it will still have the same name. Now, let's see how this knowledge can be turned into a working musical rhythm.

We can take a simple "E5" power chord, and give it some momentum. We can add single notes from the parent scales to create a rhythm part, and give even simple fingered chords some complexity.

Ex.3
(with low "E" string pedal tones) E5 F#5/E 1E|-----------------|-----------------| 2B|-----------------|-----------------| 3G|-----------------|-----------------| 4D|-2---------------|-4---------------| 5A|-2---------------|-4---------------| 6E|-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-|-2-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

G#5/E A5/E 1E|-----------------|-----------------| 2B|-----------------|-----------------| 3G|-----------------|-----------------| 4D|-6---------------|-7---------------| 5A|-6---------------|-7---------------| 6E|-4-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-|-5-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

A pedal tone is a note or series of notes that repeats after chords are struck. Like the examples above, the Low "E" note is the pedal tone. A pedal tone tends to give the music it's momentum and motion.

Make sure to use some palm muting on the Low open notes for that heavy effect.

Let's try adding some scale tones, besides the low "E", to the mix;

Ex.3

E5 F#5 1E|-----------------|-----------------| 2B|-----------------|-----------------| 3G|-----------------|-----------------| 4D|-2---------------|-4---------------| 5A|-2---------------|-4---------------| 6E|-0-2-0-4-0-2-4-0-|-2-0-4-0-2-0-4-0-| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

G#5 A5 1E|-----------------|-----------------| 2B|-----------------|-----------------| 3G|-----------------|-----------------| 4D|-6---------------|-7---------------| 5A|-6---------------|-7---------------| 6E|-4-0-5-0-2-0-4-0-|-5-0-4-0-5-0-7-0-| 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 & 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

The example above doesn't sound particularly good, but it gives you an idea of just how these devices can be applied. And there is no rule that says you have to only use scale tones on the low "E" string, either. You can apply scale tones on other strings. There is also no rule that says you have to use scale tones from the Major scale. You can use minor scale tones, or even non-scale tones, as long as it sounds good. Metal music, especially thrash and death metal, tend toward the darker sounds of minor scales, but they also utilize non-traditional and even chromatic scale ideas for the riffs. Just let your ear be your guide, and you will do just fine.

A Final Thought

Valentine's Day

Just in case your wife/husband or girlfriend/boyfriend has not already dropped the hints, Valentine's Day is February 14th. We always see the images of hearts and love symbols, representing love for our significant others. Of course, this is more a concept of romance and warm feelings than it is of real love. Nothing wrong with any of that, to a point. But the occasion of this time of year has me reflecting on a love of another kind, or rather, an object of love of another kind. That is the love we should have for our God.

In a recent devotional I read, Oswald Chambers wrote these words; "Am I as spontaneously kind to God as I used to be, or am I only expecting God to be kind to me? Does everything in my life fill His heart with gladness, or do I constantly complain because things don't seem to be going my way? Am I as filled to overflowing with love for Jesus Christ as I was in the beginning?

Does He ever find me pondering a time when I cared only for Him?"

As I read those words, I became ever aware that we believers spend an awful lot of time concerning ourselves with what God can do for us. But do we ever consider what we can do for God? I realize we cannot earn our salvation, or impress God with our works. But have we ever stepped up to do something simply because it would bring gladness to God's heart? Have we had a passion for service, not because it would be the right thing to do, but because it would please God?

Jesus told us that the Law and the Prophets hinged on two things, the first being: Love God with all of your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

Could it be that God has all but our hearts? I wonder.
